Deception Cove is technically the third book in the Rainshadow Series, with Canyons of Night being the prequel and The Lost Night being the first book. Do you need to read them in order? NO. As always the books stand alone quite well but it is always more fun to read them in order. Do you need to have read any of Jayne Castle first? Well, no...but if you read Orchid, the very first book, then you have background and insight into the whole premise of Harmony being settled and why they are cut off from Earth.
Alice North has been disappearing and hiding all her life, as one of the few kids brought up in an orphanage, as family and marriage is extremely important on Harmony, she is different and a little weary of people. He first attempt at marriage found her husband trying to kill her for an inheritance she knew nothing about, now hes dead and her ex-mother-in-law blames Alice and is making her life a living hell.
Drake Sebastian is part of the Sebastian family, they own The Preserve on Rainshadow and along with his brother Harry, they have been trying to discover what is going on in the Preserve that is making life on Rainshadow almost unlivable. Drake knows that he needs Alice the minute he sees her.
Welcome to the world of Harmony, the future, para-senses are the norm and dust bunnies are sometimes pets and protectors. I love Jayne Castle's world of Harmony, I love Rainshadow, in fact it is an island I think I could live on and fit into well. What can I say but another awesome book. The story draws iyou in and the next thing you know you are done with the book and you wonder how that happened so fast!
I have been a fan of Jayne Castle's future world since the beginning and I continue to find things that I love in each book. I especially love that each character is a strong talent that other people think is dangerous, but when the couple is put together, their strong talents mix and bring out the best in each person making the team greater than the individuals. I love that concept and find it refreshing to continue seeing.

The Lost Night, Rainshadow Book 1

The Lost Night is technically the second book in the Rainshadow series, although it is labeled as book one, Canyons of Night is labeled as the prequel to The Lost Night. Do you need to read the books in order? No - they all stand alone quite well, but it is more fun to read them in order.
Rachel Blake was a good friend to Charlotte (Canyons of Night) and she also has moved back to Rainshadow. Rachel can read auras, and although it is not a sought after or marketable talent, it can be a good thing to have. She is able to tell right off the bat when someone is evil.
Harry Sebastian, and his family have owned The Preserve for ever, but his family has sent him to Rainshadow when Slade Allteridge, the chief of police in Rainshadow called. Something is going on in the Preserve and they need to find out what and deal with it.
The Lost Night sorta picks up where Canyons of Night left off, just a little time has passed. It looks more into what is going on in the Preserve and centers around Harry and Rachel. We do get to see a little of Slade and Charlotte in this book, but not too much.
I love the Jayne Castle books set in the future on Harmony. I have always found them to be interesting and something that I want to know more about and I have to say that this one did not disappoint. The characters have their own flaws and yet they find the person that complements their flaws and makes them a better person overall. Excellent story.

Canyons of Night - Looking Glass Trilogy, book 3

Far in the future, on a new world, cut off from Earth by the closing of a travel curtain that at one time allowed people to settle this world, humanity has developed paranormal senses. Charlotte feels that she got the short stick in the para-senses, her light talent allows her to turn artifacts to their owner, but that is about it, not something that has a lot of demand in the work force, and it also has created some side effects in the terms of panic attacks for her. This has left her shy nd unsure of herself, when she meets Slade Attridge, he is everything she isn't and one night of teenage friendship has shaped her views on men ever since. Now she is back on Rainshadow, Slade is too. Is it meant to be or is it something else altogether.
Slade has spent the last years off Rainshadow making a name for himself in the FBPI (Federal Bureau of Psi Investigation). He has been extremely talented and worked on some very sensitive cases, which has connected him with both the Arcane Society and the famous Jones & Jones paranormal investigators from Earth. Now he is back on Rainshadow, hoping to hide for awhile due to some bad news from his last mission.
This story introduces the reader to the Island of Rainshadow, while at the same time expanding on the Looking Glass series, as well as the Arcane Society and the famous Jones and Jones. Readers and fans of Jayne Castle will know the Arcane Society. Personally I love the books written by the author under the name Amada Quick, which are the Victorian era stories and the ones by Jayne Castle, which are the future era stories. There are others written in current times under the name Jayne Ann Krentz, but I have never found them as intriguing as the past or future.
With this story we have a para-senses, there is some intrigue, some romance and a story that is well put together and keeps you reading so fast. You don't ever want to put this book down until the end, then I found myself searching for the next book!
I have been a fan of the world of Harmony since the first book, Orchid and this one did not disappoint.
